Questions about plants and dogs

Is sago palm toxic to dogs?

Yes, very. Every part of a sago palm is toxic to dogs, the seeds most of all, and it can damage a dog’s liver badly enough to kill it. If you think your dog has chewed any of it, take it to the vet straight away, even if it seems fine.

My puppy chews my plants. What can I do?

Keep toxic plants in a room your puppy can’t get into, or somewhere it won’t reach even when it’s grown, and leave only the ones on this page within reach. Even a non-toxic plant can make a dog sick if it eats a lot of it. If you think it has eaten a toxic plant, call your vet.

Which houseplants are toxic to dogs?

Among the most common, pothos, monstera and peace lily irritate the mouth and tongue, so the dog drools and may vomit or struggle to swallow. Snake plant and aloe cause vomiting and diarrhoea, dracaena vomiting and loss of appetite, and jade plant vomiting and unsteadiness.

Which succulents are safe for dogs?

Echeveria, haworthia, burro’s tail and Christmas cactus are non-toxic. Aloe, jade plant and kalanchoe are toxic.

Are poinsettias toxic to dogs?

Mildly. The sap irritates the mouth and stomach and sometimes causes vomiting, but it rarely goes further than that. It’s still best kept where your dog can’t reach it.
